I was making this icon and I thought I would make a tutorial for it because it's actually pretty simple.

Made in Photoshop:CS2. I'm pretty sure it's translatable to other programs, but there will be detailed instructions for Photoshop: CS2 in this tut.

What you will learn:
How to crop an image
How to make an image black and white
How to blend using the "add vector mask"
How to use the "feather tool"
How to use the "polygonal lasso tool"
How to use light textures.

This tutorial is extremely detailed and explains how to use the tools as well as explaining why I'm using certain techniques. It seems like a lot of steps for one little icon, but once you know how to use the tools it takes no time at all to make.

We are going to make this icon:

Please let me know if this tutorial was helpful.

If there are any parts that are not clear or you have a question please don't hesitate to ask.

The icon is up for adoption with credit.

Thanks

In this tutorial I am going to show you how to do the techniques I used in my "Northman header".
Click the thumbnail to see the header in my personal journal

This tutorial is intended for beginners, so that you may learn how to use more advanced tools and do more advanced techniques in Photoshop CS2. If you already know how to use the tools then you can skip the How to parts in the tutorial.

I don't think it will be translatable to other programs, but it is probably translatable to other versions of Photoshop. Some of the tools may be in different places on your program though, but as long as you have them you should be able to do this.

This tutorial is for my "Northman header" as I mentioned above. (I'm sorry, but my header IS NOT up for grabs, nor is any part of it. I know I can't really prevent people from taking it, but please don't. Please make your own. That's why I'm writing this tutorial, so that you can learn the tools and use YOUR OWN CREATIVITY to make YOUR OWN HEADER.

Please do not copy exactly what I have done. Feel free to use the same textures, but please experiment with other images. Well, the pic of Eric Northman is not mine, so if you have it then you can use it of course.

Techniques and tools explained:
Blending, Magic Wand Tool, Polygonal Lasso Tool, Feather tool, horizontal type mask tool, Add Layer Mask, Making brushes, adding text, Desaturating an image, Eyedropper Tool and many more.

This is really in-depth and long long long so please be sure you have some time to spare. All of the images and examples in the tutorial are linked. If they weren't this would just be crazy. Crazier than it already is. I encourage you to click on the links to see the examples, they will help you alot. Also, everything in this tutorial is optional. Basically I am just showing you how to do the different techniques and how to use the tools. It's up to you which of them you use in the graphic you make and how you use them.

Ok, take a deep breath and let's get started.

NORTHMAN HEADER TUTORIAL
Feel free to click on the link cut to the technique you want to learn

Preparation - New File and Image Decisions and Preparation )
How to use the Magic Wand Tool )
How to desaturate an image )
How to use Feather with the Polygonal Lasso Tool )
Adding Textures to the Header )
How to change the Blend Mode )
How to use Add Vector Mask )
How to set an image as a brush and use it )
Make another Brush and stamp it on your image )
How to add text to your image )
How to use the Horizontal Type Mask Tool )
Finishing up the header using textures )
Let's add some light textures to the header )
Add the text by the header title )
Finishing up the header )

Save the header as a .psd file first and most importantly. Then you can flatten it and save it as a .jpg or .png. I prefer .png myself because it's better for text.

Please let me know if there is anything that is not clear in the instructions. If you have a different, quicker way of doing something please put it in a comment. I'd like to know and I'm sure other people would as well. If I used the wrong terms for some things please let me know.

If you have any questions please ask.

Please comment. I'd like to know what you think of the tutorial.

Thanks for reading. :)

I made an icon tutorial. It's a color tutorial, but I'm not sure how to describe the color.

Made using Photoshop CS2. You will be using Selective Color, fill layers, a texture and a mask, various blend modes. All settings are flexible depending on your base.

This tutorial is dedicated to [livejournal.com profile] butlerina87

We will be making this icon.

300 Icons - color tutorial )

I hope this is helpful.

If something isn't clear or you have a question please ask.

You will learn how to:
+ Use the Blur Tool
+ screen and gaussian blur an image
+ Use fill layers and blend modes to color an image
+ Use the Polygonal Lasso tool
+ Use feather
No Selective Coloring necessary

I made this tutorial using Photoshop CS2, but it will work fine in PS Elements and will probably transfer just fine to other graphics programs.

We will be going from this to this
(See the end of tutorial for actual size of finished image)

In this tutorial I am going to show you how to prepare and sharpen an image and how to color it without using Selective Color. You will end up with a sort of old colorized photograph "look" that you can then add other textures to like scratches or creases and you can put a white border around it to make it look like a picture from a scrapbook.

Keep in mind that there are many ways to prep an image and I am just showing you one way. Please feel free to use this method in conjunction with whatever method you normally use. Also, any settings or colors I have mentioned in this tutorial can be adjusted for the image you use to get the best affect.

I can see humor in those eyes )

Please let me know if you see any mistakes or if something is not clear and easily followed. If you have any questions please ask.

Thanks for stopping by. :)

A blending tutorial featuring Mick St. John. I'm kind of in love with every detail of Alex O'Loughlin's face, from his round forehead to his cleft chin and everything in between. ;)

We're going to be making this header from that lovely face: click the thumbnail

This tutorial was made using Photoshop CS2. We're going to blend again, using the "add layer mask" tool. I'm also going to show you how to use a "gradient map" to change the color of a screencap. This blending tutorial is a little easier than my last one.

Blending on a black background )

I hope this was helpful. If there is anything you don't understand or you see any mistakes please let me know in a comment.

The header is, of course, up for grabs. If you want to use it and need the text changed please let me know. Please do not try to add text to it yourself. It will look weird.

Please credit [livejournal.com profile] phlourish_icons or [livejournal.com profile] endlessdeep if you use the header.

I love comments, so please leave one.

Thanks everyone. :)

Blending Images

This tutorial is for [livejournal.com profile] alexandral and anyone else who wants to learn how to blend images. We are going to be making a wallpaper for your desktop. Beginners are welcome.

I'm wordy so be warned. But I think, if you're a beginner, the wordiness is helpful. But, I'll let you be the judge of that. :)

I use Photoshop CS2. You will learn how to use the "add layer mask" tool, the "Polygonal Lasso Tool" and how to "feather". I'm not sure if other graphic editing programs have the same tools, but they might have something similar. So even if you don't have Photoshop you might still be able to learn something from this tutorial or at the very least get some inspiration. I hope. :)

Beginners should be able to follow this tutorial. But, please don't look on this tutorial as a step by step tutorial. You will not be able to create the exact same wallpaper I have created. I'm going to show you where to find the tools I've used and how to use them, the rest is up to you. You can use the images I've used or use your own.

Most of the examples are linked and the graphics are reduced in size.

Blending Tutorial - Rough Around The Edges )

Blending Your Pictures )

If you have any questions or something is not clear please feel free to ask in a comment.

If this tutorial was helpful please let me know in a comment. I really like to get feed back on these things.

I hope I have helped some people to learn some new techniques and I also hope I've inspired you.

The wallpaper is up for grabs if you like it. You can find different sizes here. Please please comment and credit if you take it home with you.

I am going to do another blending tutorial using black and white photos on a black background. Kind of like my black and white Mick St. John wallpaper. Basically we'll be use the same blending techniques we've used here with a few differences, but since it's a black background it's a little easier.

Happy New Year everyone! I have a tutorial to share with you. :)

I was asked to make a tutorial for this icon of Beth Turner from Moonlight.

Made using Photoshop CS2. Translatable to all graphics programs I should think. There is no selective coloring layers or anything like that.

I couldn't exactly remember all the steps, so I had to start from scratch to duplicate the icon. And since I had to do that I went ahead and used a different screencap, from the same scene so the lighting is similar.

Of course your screencaps are going to have different lighting so you'll have to play around with the opacity on your layers. Just, you know, experiment as always. :)

If you have any questions please don't hesitate to ask. Comments are very much appreciated as always.

Thanks and I hope this is helpful and gives you some ideas and inspiration. :)

The icon was made using Photoshop CS2, but I think it is translatable to other programs. There is a layer using Curves, but it is just to brighten up the icon and there are other ways of doing this so please don't let that deter you. You will be using desaturate, screen, soft light, auto contrast and about three textures and one text brush for this tutorial. It's pretty easy. So have fun and experiment. :)

We are going to work with a screencap of Spike in his crypt, looking all sly and smug. It's from Dead Things, BtVS season 6 episode 13. The scene this cap comes from happens right before one of the sexiest scenes ever between Buffy and Spike and they never even touch or see each other. So yeah, we all know how he knows she is out there. But I digress. Back to icon making.

Thanks so much. :)

If anyone knows who made the red textures please let me know in a comment. I know they are credit in my resources, but I'd like to mention that person here as well.

This is a tutorial for the "Beach Bungalow" icon that I made. [livejournal.com profile] gabez_iconz asked about it over at [livejournal.com profile] icon_tutorial. So this tutorial is for her and of course anyone else who wants to try it. :)

The icon was made was made using Photoshop CS2, with two adjustment layers...Color Balance and Selective Color. I also used some fill colors I got from another tutorial which I don't have the link to right now because I haven't transferred all my bookmarked tutorials over here to my new computer yet. So I don't remember who the tutorial was by. Sorry.
